Sky and earth form a system where a to-and-fro movement happens. Be it for their mythological or scientific aspects, sky and earth are intertwined as a body in motion, and form the collective, cosmic space where we live in.

As far as we know, there is no beginning and there is no end, although maybe the sky begins in ourselves, as we take it in, and come up with a notion for it. Aside from that, mountains may be the landmark where sky bargains its sacred existence with the earth, and maybe this is the reason why the mankind’s overarching mythologies are so important, because their tops reach up for the clouds above, as points of connection between the sky and the earth, where such union of the double materializes; this is what happens in Olympus, where the Greek gods and Zeus indwell as the ray of light that governs the skies; and in the Himalayas, where a lotus-pose Shiva smiles in the yogi mode known as Digambara, or sky-clad, while goddess Gaṅgā descents from the clouds and with her hair is suffused, and runs into the earth as the Ganges River itself.

And beyond the astonishing scientific sky where the Hubble vanished, the sky that we culturally concocted, in turn, is something that goes inward, deep within ourselves. The reaches of the sacred sky are quite apart from those of the scientific sky, which unfolds in atmospheric layers, namely, the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and the exosphere, which match the content of chemicals of assorted densities, and reach one thousand kilometers away, into the outer space. Nonetheless, the sky that welcomes us is more that of divine nature; and each and every culture has translated its mysteries in their own, unique way.

Paula Scamparini’s video installation bespeaks Brazilians’ cultural belonging that is comprised in our star system, where sky-gazing is some kind of magic, engaging us in the dynamics of being, and whereby we find our own space, not only phisically, but rather spiritually, as the sky is some kind of preciousness, inviting us into the sublime. The sky has always had an effect on us, and its translation by unlike peoples in Brazil bequeaths us a mythological, spiritual, and scientific legacy that plays a fundamental role in our building of meanings.

The installation, developed for the show together with Austrian artist Sabine Groschup, contrasts the cultures of the two artists by dealing with environmental issues in the so-called South, more specifically in Brazil, one of the artists‘ home countries.

The installation’s format directly refers to the industrial disaster that occurred in Minas Gerais on 5th November 2015, seriously affecting Rio Doce (Sweet River), one of the five main rivers in the country, causing an enormous ecological damage...

Vermelhos (Reds) is a group of works produced at Montemor-o-novo, in Portugal, in 2016. The community form Portuguese village was invited to take part as models, or ‘soft molds’ for the ceramic pieces, in a reference to the practice of producing roof tiles from the thighs of slaves in Brazil during Portuguese colonization times. Initially, the four basic skin colors (red, yellow, black and white) were collected and produced in clay. From those four clays in specific colors, collaborators should mix clays trying to reach their own skin color. The mold of the thighs was than made using the new colors of clay produced by each collaborator, using their own body as mold. This way, Portuguese and other foreign legs were molded in clay, and let dry, in a reference to different skin colors. During the time necessary to dry, talks and sings were filmed. Portraits were taken. Afterwards, the clay was burnt, and finally different colors produced at once got to acquire very similar tones, which were associated mostly to the color of the skin addressed to Indigenous people in Americas: Red. The pieces in ceramics were shown as installation in gallery space, but the project counts on other pieces, such as video, audio and photographic ones, yet not exhibited.
